numbers written in words instead of symbols

Sometimes I can figure numbers better if I write them out in words like
Emergency is nine one one. I am fifty eight years old. It takes longer but numbers written as words make a bit more sense to me than # symbols. Those just seem too abstract for me to relate to at all. Has anyone else experimented with this?
