The first thing that we need to do, is to get a clear idea of what our Aims and Objectives are, for this first Dyscalculia Day?
Once this is established, then we are in a much clearer position to develop ways to achieve them.
How many people across the world, would you guess have ever heard of the word Dyscalculia?
Maybe one in a thousand? Or less?
I would suggest that we could have a single aim and objective, to at least get it up to one in a hundred by the end of Dyscalculia Day.
Where perhaps all that we have achieved, is that now one in a hundred people, know that their is a Maths Dyslexia called Dyscalculia!
Then in 2009, we aim to get that up to one in ten.
For 2010, we could aim to make Dyscalculia as commonly known as Dyslexia!
Afterall, I would suggest that the starting point for most Members here, was just to find out that their is a name for their difficulties with maths, Dyscalculia.
So what do you think about this as our aim and objective, for next March?

"For 2010, we could aim to make Dyscalculia as commonly known as Dyslexia!"
LOL, here even that is not really well known! But yeah, you're right. The size of the problem is just the same.
As for the goal of this D-day thing, I guess just letting all people know what it is and what importance does it really have would be nice.

Yeah. I guess that if there was one thing that came out of the d-day, it's that people have heard of it and know a few symptoms. Maybe include the phrase 'maths dyslexia' since that seems to be something that people use to describe what they have, ven before they realise what it is.
Se even if that's putting up a poster that says
-DYSCALCULIA-
Can't do maths?
Problems reading clocks?
Forget left from right?
Problems with direction?
Accidentally switch names or words?
*INSERT SLOGAN*
Even something as simple as that would increase awareness. Has anyone made any posters that can be downloaded? I'm in the middle of doing a dyscalculia awareness campaign for my final graphic design degree so I'll see what I can get made before the big day! |

Rac, in the navigation you can click on "SPREAD THE WORD" - there's a flyer. A poster would be fantastic too, if you wanna make that? |

I have a suggestion! We might make a printable "Poll Chart". Each forum member who wants to participate could print out the page. It would have room for that forum member to 'poll' ten random people, asking, three questions to each person. The main question, of course, would be, "Do you know what Dyscalculia is?", and the other two questions would be something supportive to this theme.
We won't ask their names, ages, or anything about where they live. But, we might ask, "Are you a Senior Citizen, an Adult, a youth, or a child?" as our last question. Of course, by then, we'd already have the answer to our main question.
Geoff had mentioned earlier on this Thread that in 2008, "perhaps one in a thousand, or less" knew about Dyscalculia. Having an actual 'poll' of the public would give us a 'starting point' by which to measure "How many people know about Dyscalculia?". - jus'

"Dyscalculia Day"... Here's another idea. What if one of us were to write a book that would contain the words "Dyscalculia Day" in it's title?... And what if that person could get the book finished and released before March of 2011? In order to accomplish this, it might be necessary for the author to do 'interviews' with some dyscalculics. It would probably be best if those interviewed actually had the diagnosis of 'dyscalculia' or 'mathmatics disorder' (depending on one's country of origin), even if this fact is not specifically mentioned in the book.
That's my idea! Geoff or Ert may see something wrong with this idea that I haven't foreseen, and if so, that's fine. Feel free to delete this post if the idea is 'bad enough'. - jus' |

That's not a bad idea jus, but March 2012 would be a more realistic publication date I think. |
