Yeah I like Screwball's idea.
Has a nice symmetry with 'dys' on one side and 'dis' on the other!
Also it clears up the Dyslexia confusion we were having earlier. It still says that numbers get mixed up (like Dyslexia) but doesn't make people think that Dyslexia is actually involved!
Nice one Screwball!

I came to notice not stupid's signature I HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE !
I like that. How about incorporating that line to the slogan?
I don't know something like
"Numbers I haven't got a clue but Dyscalculia I do" ??

I'm starting to wonder whether it's possible to have just 1 slogan.
Because a slogan has different purposes, to inform people about dyscalculia, to just provide a tag line to a name (like dyscalculia forum) and to explain what dyscalculia is.
Maybe we could have a couple?
*One for when we need to say what it actually is (like written on a T-Shirt or car window sticker) e.g. 'dyscalculia is a maths disabiity'
*One as a general tag line when we need to add more power( like on Dyscalculia Forum or a future Dyscalculia society) e.g. 'Because Dyscalculics count too'
This might make the slogans more affective so that they are being used for the right purpose.
Sorry if this just confuses things, but it might help us to be more affective.

Hi Rac
I fully agree with you, we need lots of Slogans!
I must say, that for our first Dyscalculia Day, a Slogan Campaign would be a good place to start!
Which everyone here could be involved with.
By simply posting Slogans everywhere they go!
It could be on the internet, or it could be on a notice-board at work, a community notice-board, a shop window, a bus or train station wall, or a staff-room notice-board, or on a school gate?
Their is something in maths, called Exponential Growth?
I tell ten people something, and then those ten people tell another ten people, which adds up to a hundred.
A few steps later, it becomes a million!
Our first aim needs to be to let the world know that Maths Difficulties have a name; Dyscalculia.
I saw it on the wall, while waiting for the bus.

Hi guys,
that could be started all ready, you have a good poster and flyer sitting there that say it all, i have already distrubuted a copy of each to my daughters school and her previous primary schools, who are going to post them on the teachers notice boards.

sounds good to me. So for now, if we just focus on a general awareness slogan (like 'Maths Difficulties have a name; Dyscalculia' rather than an organisation slogan, we might actually get something done!
On a slightly different note, I'm in my final year of my Graphic Design degree and have decided my final project to be the 'British Dyscalculia Society'. It's a theoretical idea but I'll be producing posters, information packs for teachers and employers, logos and so on, so when I'm done, I can post the results on here if anyone wants them!
I think in real life, I'd rather have an 'International Dyscalculia Society', (plus saying IDS sounds like 'Ideas'!) but it's easier for my project! |

IF DOING MATHS IS LIKE WALKING IN FOG, MAYBE ITS DYSCALCULIA.
or the educational approach:
Maths problems?
Problems with clocks?
Can't navigate?
Can't remember sequences?
Use the wrong name or word?
MAYBE IT'S DYSCALCULIA.

Maybe we could just pick about 5 so there's choice. There are too many good ones to just have one. |

Abnd we should have a poll so that everyone can vote on their favorite slogan. |

Yeah. Maybe if everyone lists their favourite one's that they've seen so far, and we can see if there are any which keep appearing. Maybe if we listed our top 5? |

Plenty of good Slogans already
Though what we also need to do, is think about what different places we could use the slogans?
Where different places, would need different slogans?
Where we need to identify our 'target audience'.
For example, in a General Public place, where the aim is to just create general awareness.
This is where we need short 3 or 4 word slogans.
That people might just glance at, as they walk past.
Which they might not have really 'read', but their brain did register it.
Much like a graffiti tag on a wall, that you might walk past everyday.
Though if it is a position where the person is standing still and looking in general area. Then maybe a 2 line slogan could work?
The distinction that I'm making, is between the 'majority' who have no problem with Numbers, so they'll pay little attention.
Yet they might just glance for a second, at a 3 or 4 word slogan?
Then a month later, when someone might mention a problem with numbers?
They might vaguely recall the slogan?
"I saw something about that, it has a name? Something to do with Number Dyslexia?"
On the other hand, in a public space where people might have more interest in maths difficulties. A 3 or 4 line slogan might not be too much for them to read?
Though a different use of Slogans, is when someone questions your maths skills? Or equally when you tell someone that you have Dyscalculia, and they then ask: 'What's that?'
So how do you reply, without going into a long explanation?
Where a Slogan can be easy way to give them a basic idea.
Different Slogans for different situations?

Geoff I couldn't agree more! It's impossible to just have one universal slogan. So what we need is:
A short 3 or 4 word slogan that is descriptive and infomative for passers by and the like.
A longer 2 line slogan for people that have more time to read.
And maybe a 3 or 4 line slogan for people who would be more interested.
Is that right? Sounds good to me. |
