Hello all !
What do you think of our first Dyscalculia Day so far ?
Here you can post what you have achieved, experienced, your opinions and views.
-I had B.O.U.N.C.E.Radio to re-air my interview of June 2007. No reactions so far.
-I wrote emails to local newspapers and tv stations about our day. No reactions so far.
Glady I was able to watch and listen to the BBC interview of our member Val and was quiet impressed. Big RESPECT to Val !

Val is the member of the month. Heck, the year. Really cool.
Countess, where did you hear the radio interview and see the tv interview? I can't find it on the bbc website.
Despite being sick I managed to post website bulletins at work and scool, almost a thousand people got the message.

ALB's little boy was on the bbc broadcast apparently but I missed it which is such a shame. I can't find it on the bbc except to say it came on aftre nigel havers. Anyway they don't do reruns so it is a shame. Well done though. Exciting isn't it. I have nagged children's newsround again.no response though |

Mette,
I found the interview last night at the BBC Radio Oxford site. There is a link for 'listen again' and Val's interview was on 'Daytime with Danny and Lou'. I tried again just now, but it is gone.
Maybe there is a way that we could get the interview for the forum ? Maybe Val is in possession of it ?
We do have a satellite dish and are able to get many English tv programs. Right after taking my daughter to school, I watched and watched and watched

hey hey hey! The local newspaper published my letter to them about dyscalculia. actually its under the "opinion" section but atleast that is something.
Sorry for my bad english, I was typing that letter 3 am in the morning when I should be studying for a major exam [ I failed my maths exam anyway, again ] and I wasnt feeling well but I felt to the urge to spread the word. hehehe. They edited the letter to make it shorter, but honestly, in the original letter there was quite detailed explanation of dyscalculia.
this is the online version, check it out

hehe. it aint anything big and fancy like tv and radio interviews but owh well, im happy enough I did my part to spread the word

Here's Kyla's letter:
Please create more awareness about dyscalculia
HAVE you heard of dyscalculia? It is like dyslexia and is often regarded as ‘number dyslexia’. Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability in mathematics.
It seems that no dyscalculic has problems with mathematics alone, but he also struggles with problems in learning to tell time, left or right orientation, rules in games etc.
Many people are struggling with dyscalculia without knowing it. They suffer in school where they are labelled lazy, unwilling to learn, stupid and dumb.
They can’t perform simple calculations like 3 + 5 or 2 x 10. Later on, they will develop depression and loss of self-esteem due to their inability in maths. But the saddening part is lack of public awareness.
Public awareness of dyscalculia is almost non-existent in Malaysia. Although there are NGOs and government bodies that are willing to help dyscalculics, awareness has to be raised.
Schools teachers should be trained to recognise students who show symptoms of dyscalculia. Screening of learning disabilities should be done nationwide at all schools.
The Government should make an effort to create educational programmes tailored to the needs of dyscalculics.
Although the Government has allowed those with learning disabilities to register as OKU (orang kurang upaya), it won’t make a difference as many educational institutions do not recognise dyscalculia.
Go to a public school and tell them your child has dyscalculia, they would just think it’s another fancy word for “my child is slow in maths”.
Kudos to KDISC ( Kiwanis Disability Information and Support Centre) at www.disabilitymal... for their website that promotes public awareness on the disability.
Another important group dedicated to dyscalculia is www.dyscalculiafo... Mutual support can be gained from this forum as many who are coping with dyscalculia can share their stories.
To promote public awareness of dyscalculia, let’s mark March 3 as International Dyscalculia Day as suggested by the community of dyscalculia forum. Our government should also create public awareness and support for those coping with such learning disabilities.
A DYSCACULIC STUDENT,
Seberang Prai.

Hi again. Thanks
Owh by the way, if u all are wondering, OKU, (orang kurang upaya) in english means disabled people. Orang = People. Kurang Upaya = Disabled.
Owh yea i just realised they did a typo, it should be Dyscalculic. Ah well

Well, I did spread some translated versions of your flyers across town, in youth organization offices, educational facilities and in front of a movie theater - I hope the info got to the place it should. Also, I made a vid on YouTube for Dyscalculia Day, which has 190 views this far.
I'm looking forward to doing other DC-related things, but I begin my high school graduation exams tomorrow so you have to wait
tt's cool to be a part of a bunch which understands my struggles and everything :-)
