I use to have problems with knowing where my Right and Left is. Now i find myself having trouble with knowing which way is North, East, West and South. For example if I'm outside and someone says look North I'll automatically assume North is in front of me (but that's obviously wrong). Or if someone gives me directions using North, East, West or south I automatically get confused. I know the the sun rises in the east and sets in the West but that still does not help. Don't even get me started on NorthEast, SouthWest, NorthWest etc or anything like that!

I used to have a ton of trouble with that. I've lived in one town my whole life so I've gotten a bit better(finally!), but if I get into a city I don't know. I'm lost.
I've always blamed it on being blonde and laughed it off but it really is annoying. Especially when somebody is trying to give you directions.

Not so much with the N,S,E or W, but when you navigate, as I did in my boat, I would set a course towards say 360 degrees in one direction. To return to the same place (very important) you have to reverse direction with the opposite numbers. Now throw wind, turns, current into the mix. or deliniation. Sad
Now realize it can and most likely will be at night or in the fog. You can't depend on land features or lights. GPS helps now but that can't be depended on and one usually won't have one in a smaller boat. Besides it relies on tons of numbers to of course.

I always used to get NSEW mixed up.
But someone taught me this saying... and pointed me in the right direction for each one - and I haven't forgotten since!!
Never
Eat
Soggy
Weeties

Mind you I still can't remember how many days are in each month!!
and as for left and right - i often have to hold my hand up in front of me each time as a reminder...

Another trick is that "West" in French is "Ouest" and if you read the first letters counterclock wise it spells NOSE

I live in the north bay of northern California and the only way I can "see" NESW is by remebering that San Francisco is always south of where I live. I swear I picture the Golden Gate with a big S over it.

I learned it as
Never
Eat
Sea
Weed

Dear Laura,
Oh, good. That makes me feel better. I don't exactly know WHY it makes me feel better, but it does. Thanks.

Dear Sacmonarch4,
Welcome to the forum. I got a low score in High School on reading "graphs, maps, and charts". I thought I'd done well. But, evidently, I was a lot slower at it than others in my grade were. Little did I know that this was part of my dyscalculia. It would be decades before I found out what my problem was. We're glad to have you here. Stick around and you'll meet everybody,

Yup, N,E,S,W are just as troublesome for me as my lefts and rights are. I too assume that I'm already facing north when someone asks me to look that way, either that or I just stand there looking confused.

Hello. I am really thankful that this isn't a problem for me and I can't imagine how annoying it would be for you. I've always been an outdoors person and grew up knowing that the sun comes up in the East and goes down in the West. If it is around mid-day then where the sun is, it would be roughly north. But then that's if you live down under! I have sometimes used the stars to find my way home (true) because we have the Southern Cross to guide us.

Dear Mezzi,
My beloved grandmother used to take me outside at night and show me the constellations. I was never ever to guide myself by the stars, but due to my grandmother's explanation, I knew that others used them this way. It fascinated me, and seeing your posting made me remember those precious times with my grandmother. I think that the North star is one that we can usually see in my hemisphere. And yes, the sun helps me a lot. Texas is very sunny and flat. Especially as an adult, whatever house I live in, I can make sense of directions by connecting the map with which side of my house is hot and sunny in the morning and which side is hot and sunny in the evening.

I remember them as North, South, East, and West, too. I just remember that North is on top and South is on the bottom, and that the West is on the left because W and E spell WE. I know that is confusing, but that is my wierdness. Smile

I just don't understand directions. Whenever someone says N, I always think that N is right in front of me. I don't understnad the way the directions change....I just don't get it. I can't wrap my mind around it.
I'm NOT stupid!!!!!

Actually, I surprisingly don't- I can remember N & S with no problem, and then I use my way of remembering W & E: They spell "we" not "ew"!
