This sort of evolved from a thread about weight/body image. The general idea is we can share information and encourage each other in the pursuit of healthy eating & exercise habits. Men and women are both welcome. And it doesn't matter if you're just starting out or if you're into maintaining your good habits.

I'd slacked off from the gym for 2 weeks (which is the longest in quite some time that I've slacked off), but I went back this morning. Did the circuit weights and then 45 minutes on the elliptical. The UN is in session & all the bigwigs in town mean motorcades & street closures, so I have incentive to get into the city early to avoid the traffic. I may even try to make spin class on Wednesday. Which means getting up at 5am.

Holiday coping strategies:

Ok, I'm seeing the Halloween candy in the stores. Before we know it the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the whole month of December combo will be starting. Here's what I do to try to deal with it:

Halloween: I never get many trick or treaters, but I'm afraid of running out of candy, so I buy too much. I pick candy I don't like so I won't eat it.

Thanksgiving: The day itself, I enjoy everything I want. Stuffing, potatoes, pumpkin pie. But I make sure to get at least a walk in the park in before hand. And the leftovers are only turkey, greens & cranberry sauce (if homemade). No stuffing or potatoes.

December: I try to eat reasonably before going to parties so I won't be overly hungry. And one tv show said to survey the whole buffet so you can plan accordingly. I do most of my shopping online because it takes less time than the mall and it doesn't cut into work out time.

Made it to the gym again this morning. Picked up some turkey & low fat swiss cheese to have with spinach leaves and dijon mustard on low carb pitas. That's lunch for the rest of the week.

9-22 Cleaned all the boxes and crap off of my exercise equipment

9-23 (Starting slow) 2 -15 minute sessions on healthrider, had broccoli salad for lunch, Bonus Challenge: 100 multiplication problem practice sheet

When I would rather do multiplication problems than exercise, I KNOW I'm in trouble! Grin

Thanks for starting this, Lisa!

I'm getting back on the straight and narrow. Gonna post what I eat. Helpms me stay focused. If I eat a bunch of crap, I have to confess. And I dont want to confess that, so it helps me not do it.

Blood sugar hasn't been great. In fact, had a horrible migraine monday night. So, back on the wagon.

today I had:
Not a great breakfast. Cuppa joe with two little hazelnut creamers and some non dairy powder. I got to get to the store and get some decent cream. That's it.

three roasted chicken legs (drumsticks and thighs) for lunch.

Supper was better. Nice chicken breast with mushrooms, artichokes, and cream sauce. Broccoli. Tomato, mozzarella, and basil salad. Spicy shrimp appetizer. Salad with blue cheese dressing. Yum!

Came home and had a Diet Rite Cola. My indulgence.

Had an early AM appointment yesterday, so no gym. But I did get there this morning. Circuit weights & 30 minutes on the elliptical. Fat free yogurt for breakfast, coffee with skim milk and sparkling water. Not sure about lunch yet.

Dinner will be either a spinach salad (with tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese & olives) or Lean Cusine or Smart Ones. I keep a bunch in the freezer so I'm not tempted to order in when I don't feel like cooking. Though I will order in about every other week. I gained a lot of weight previously when I ordered in several times a week when I didn't feel like cooking. So I limit that to no more than once a week.

PS given our issues with numbers, for people who need locks for their gym lockers, there are some better alternatives to the random combination of digits most combination locks have. Some allow you to pick out the numbers (I picked the year I was born so I can remember it easily). Like this:

Others even allow letters:

Oh, that is cool.

When I had a Y membership, I actually resorted to grafitti. I used the downstairs locker room, which was very sparcely populated, and one night when no one was in there, penciled my locker combo onto the underside of a piece of permanent furnture where you could see it, but had to know it was there.

Note about doing this: you can make it even more secure by adding a number that means nothing to the beginning or end, if you are able to remember that it means nothing and to disregard it.

I store important numbers in my cell phone. I chop them up to look like phone numbers, in case my phone is ever stolen. Of course, sometimes it take me a moment to figure out which part to disregard, but it works fairly well.

Since we all seem to have the 'password' problem, here's what I've done. If I want to use the name of a city as a password, in my password clue I'll put a distinguishing characteristic of that city. For example, if the password were Boston98, my clue would be "Beantown year I went there". 'tho this has nothing to do with wellness or gyms. Sorry. - justfoundout

Dear Kathy,
Here's what Google says. Google never lies, does it?
"Why is Boston called Beantown?

Back in colonial days, a favorite Boston food was beans baked in molasses for several hours. Back then, Boston was sort of awash in molasses - it was part of the "triangular trade" in which slaves in the Caribbean grew sugar cane to be shipped to Boston to be made into rum to be sent to West Africa to buy more slaves to send to the West Indies. Even after the end of this practice, Boston continued as big rum producing city - the Great Molasses Flood of 1919 (which killed 21), ocurred when a tank holding molasses for rum production exploded.

Today, Boston baked beans are something of a rarity - there are no companies in the city making it and only a few restaurants serve it. If you want to try it yourself, here's a Boston baked beans recipe."
http://www.boston...l#beantown

Actually, I've never been to Boston myself. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't use any of my own passwords as the example, and Boston was about as far from anything I might use as I could get.

I tried to get the "Boston Baked Beans" recipe to open up on the link, but it wouldn't. Sorry if I've made you all hungry again. So excuse me now, while I go to my kitchen to look for a jar of Boston Baked Beans. (wicked laugh) - justfoundout

Okay. I've been pretty good, although I indulged in some tawny port last night with supper. Tawney port is kinda sweet, but I love it and I've had a rough week. My brain hurt.

Yesterday...coffee for breakfast. I gotta start doing better.

Lunch was a couple chicken haunches and some peas and carrots. Had a Diet Rite cola (no sugar, no aspertame) Supper was some low carb pasta (Dreamfields. Good stuff.), homemade tomato gravy, and Italian sausage. Salad with ranch. low carb ice cream, and some decaf with heavy cream.

Ate some watermelon before bed. I already feel better. Smile

It's raining pretty hard here today. The bus was late & traffic was bad, but I still got in half an hour of cardio at the gym & missed the UN traffic. I caved & bought a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast because I've wanted one all week. That's one thing I do to manage certain foods. I'll tell myself if I still want it at the end of the week, I can have it. I'm leaning towards soup for lunch. Maybe some miso soup with a spicy tuna sushi roll w/brown rice.

It's funny -- you can tell when I'm getting serious about weight loss -- every measuring cup is used and the food scale is always out for a few weeks. Smile

I have to remind myself of the size of my portions, they have a tendency to get larger. I'm still eating fairly healthy but eating more and suddenly those small increases add up. (See that's another irritating thing about math)

I lost a lot of weight with an on-line group (60+ pounds) but gained it back when I had some life changes that affected my exercise habits and now I have to take a medication that impacts my breathing, heartrate, etc. (The side effects actually list, an inability to exercise. What the heck??) So it's back to square one.

Here's some fun: Diet Commandments

Thou shalt recognize that cookies, cake, ice cream, and candy are not the four major food groups.

Thou shalt not lie about what happened to the doughnuts.

Thou shalt have confidence in thyself.

Thou shalt let your brain be aware of what your hands and mouth are up to.

If you have to lie down after you have eaten, thou hast overdone it.

Thou shalt stop using food to calm your frazzled nerves.

Thou shalt stop doubting yourself.

Thou shalt not find a way to eat while exercising.

If you get mad at your boss, thou shalt not punish him by having Oreos.

Thou shalt not let your diet turn you into a grouch.

Thou shalt think positive thoughts.

Thou shalt not eat something you shouldn't and then hide the wrapper in the bottom of the garbage.

Thou hast the courage to succeed.

Thou shalt keep in mind that eating an apple pie will not make you any less angry at your husband.

Thou shalt not eat a lot NOW, just in case you might get hungry LATER.

Thou shalt shun foods described as "fudgy."

Thou shalt not feel selfish for focusing on yourself.

Thou shalt learn to trust yourself.

Thou shalt recognize that your refrigerator is not the center of the universe.

In supermarkets, thou shalt avoid any aisle that makes you salivate.

Thou shalt realize that by the time a croissant is in your hand, it's usually too late.

Thou shalt exercise.

Thou shalt not reward yourself with a hot fudge sundae after exercising.

Thou needn't be overweight-it's not written in the stars, only on your shopping list.

Okay, I have been VERY VERY BAD.

The holidays are terrible, aren't they?

Not to mention, a friend gave me two pounds of Jordan Almonds, probably one of my biggest weaknesses.

I don't feel so good. I don't even wanna think about what all this is doing to my blood sugar. Sad

Time for an overhaul. Gonna try to be a little better. Feel like a bloated, groggy tick.

(No, I'm not diabetic, but I a predisposed to it, have chronic hypoglycemia, and really need to do a better job of pacing myself with the almonds.)

Blah.

The world doesn't want me to lose weight. XD I am still a healthy weight but have put on a few pounds and am no longer as firm as I would like, and I took ONE walk on the treadmill, and was horribly sick the next day. While sick, I sprained my ankle and bashed the hell out of my knee. Neither of those are quite good enough to get back on the treadmill without making my mom angry, but I might have snuck on at some point, AND NOW I HAVE STOMACH FLU!

I know what you mean Dulcy. And TwistedxKiss, rest up. When you're feeling better you can get back on track. Let your body heal first. I'm just now starting to feel better enough (foot pain from near car/pedestrian collision incident back around Thanksgiving) to get to the gym.
