I was just researching the net about Dyscalculia - Math LD. Does anyone know how I can outside testing for this in Texas? Does a doctor diagnose this? Who specifically? My 12 yr. old daughter consistently gets a 70 in math (D) and barely passed her TAKS test (standardized test). The school district is only concerned about that TAKS test and meeting their quotas. They are not concerned with getting a child diagnosed with an LD.
They do accept outside test results and I would like to get tests done with professionals outside of school. If anyone has any info please let me know. Thanks so much. |

One thing is you may want to ask them to test broadly (for say visual spatial impairment) instead of only dyscalculia. I tested average on math, but I did show a visual spatial impairment (which in turn affects math abilities). |

Also, there's a retired prof in TX, Cecil Reynolds:

He was affiliated with this testing business at one point, not sure if he still is:

Good luck on testing - mine didn't work out, so I have no advice to give you. But I would reccomend going outside of the school to get testing for your daughter, if I were you (which you already seem interested in doing).
Again, good luck! I hope you get your diagnosis. Keep us updated on your efforts!
I'm NOT stupid!!!!! |

Hi Joy,
My DD was just diagnosed last month with a "learning disability in math". We are homeschoolers, so we had to get an outside educational psychologist. She used several tests to get the diagnosis. We live in the Houston area. I could give you the name of the psychologist we used.
If we had been in public school, my daughter still wouldn't have been tested. She scores average on standardized tests and has learned coping skills to "get by" in math. But, as a homeschooler there is no hiding. It's just us......and in my gut I knew there was something not clicking. She is actually labeled "gifted and learning disabled". |

Dear ootiz5000,
Hi down there in Houston! I'm in the DFW Metroplex, and I'll be picking up my Math LD report tomorrow morning at the DARS office. I have a great psychologist who is very tuned-in to disabilities. Isn't that just the most wonderful relief when you find one who understands? I'm happy to meet you. I'm an older female. - jus' |
