About an hour ago, I spoke by phone to the nice psychologist who'd re-tested me (about a month ago) for a Math Learning Disability. I'm very happy to report that he has diagnosed me with that disability. I'll be meeting with my DARS Counselor soon for more details. I'm very happy right now, but I'm still in disbelief. I just can't believe it. And my mind is racing with ideas on what courses to take and which degree to pursue. - justfoundout

CONGRATULATIONS! I am literally grinning from ear to ear upon hearing that news... I am so happy for you, and I can't imagine how you must be feeling right now. The sense of vindication, of knowing all along that you were right about this and people just weren't listening to you... I'm so glad you finally found a "nice" psychologist who listened to you and actually appraised what you had to say instead of discarding it. This isn't just good news, it's great news. Smile

I am glad that after all what you´ve fought against the system, you end up with a recognition. It is also important for the self-esteem to prove that you were right and the others wrong.
Hopefully, it will give the energy (and the support) to pursue your studies. Mucha suerte!

Thank you all. When I saw that I had these four responses from such dear friends, I was tempted to go get a cup of coffee first, before reading them. I wanted to savor the moment. But, of course, I didn't do that. I was too anxious to feel the warmth of your support and to hear your comments. Thanks again, and I'll go get that cup of coffee now before writing any more. - jus'

I know it's been a long and difficult struggle for you to get to this point, glad you were finally able to get someone to understand. Now you can get the accomodations you need and focus on getting your degree! Best of luck with your studies & career! Smile

Thanks Evie and Carolineinoz. I'd reached a very bleak place, both educationally and financially. For this semester, I had financial aid and I have a part-time job, so I was trying to tell myself that "this isn't so bad",... but I was sounding less and less convincing to myself-- due to the student loans that I have to pay back, etc. In fact, I was starting to reproach myself that, had I not spent four years in college, I'd be in much better shape financially right now. The news of the disability diagnosis came at such a perfect time. And your friendly and understanding posts have made it all the better. I don't know exactly how this will all play out. It may still take me another year to get the degree, but now I'm not just "treading water". There will be "direction" to my efforts. Thanks again. - jus'

Well, I'm back to my old tricks! Apparently, if you keep exhausting every avenue, people begin to see that you're serious about this 'MLD thing' and begin to listen. My first college has accepted my MLD, and I'm waiting to get their official decision on how they will help me finish my Paralegal degree. I'm expecting that they will allow me to substitute Logic for the College Algebra credits. Also, I've just heard (unofficially) that a four-year university has approved my MLD. Pending that official approval, and pending what accommodations or waiver they offer, I may be attending a 4-year college for the first time this Fall.

The four-year university had at first 'denied' my MLD. They invited me to submit more documentation. I had to 'hand over' the original psychological evaluation (in all its glory) done by that first psychologist. That was the report that said that I don't have a MLD. So, this sorely tests my good logic, but somehow after giving them the report that says I don't have an MLD, now they've approved the MLD. I'm sharing this information, however bizarre it sounds, to help any future dyscalculics with this very erratic journey toward getting official 'help' from the school Disability Office. - jus'
