Hi there; good morning! I just joined this forum because I'm curious and I think I'm finally ready to ask for help.
I'm twenty-two, female, and math absolutely terrifies me. I'm eloquent and have an affectionate relationship with written word and reading but public speaking and mathematics absolutely throw me. I only barely graduated highschool because of my poor math scores and college math was so hard that I had a nervous breakdown from the lack of help I received.
After I was out of college the second semester of my first year I sat down and looked up a few things; I started searching for problems. I already know that I have adult ADD. I'm diagnosed with that and I work through it every day without the help of medication...but...maybe there's something more?
I couldn't even do math well in elementary school, but I was at a private school, so I didn't get help as much as I received ridicule. I was made to sit in the corner and refused praise because I was in the third grade and couldn't do my multiplication tables right. The teachers let the other children laugh at me, I suppose hoping that it would anger me into betterment. It didn't. It just made me feel helpless.
When I found out about dyscalculia I looked up a symptoms list an, lo and behold, I have just about every symptom. I emailed the list to my whole family and they agreed. My friends agreed. EVERYONE is fairly sure I may have this learning disorder...
...but I have absolutely no idea where to go in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area to get tested for it, and I have no Medical Insurance. I'm scared that this could ruin me; I want a career. I program computers and I'm writing a novel. I spend every day trying to convince myself that I'm not stupid. I work behind a cash register and I can barely keep things straight; it's so hard that I end up crying; my manager constantly berates me for putting my money in the wrong spot, losing things, not remembering any of the names of my coworkers unless I've known them for six months or more...
...it's terrible. It's terrible, so I found this place, and I hope that I can get some help. I know it's a lot to ask for, and I know I'm just venting my problems onto others...but I hope that this does something.
Thanks in Advance for any response at all. I'm going to bite my tongue and see.

Dear HarriedGlances,
I'm down in the DFW. There's a wonderful Educational Psychologist in Fort Worth who specializes in testing Adults for LD's. Let me know if you'd like to have his contact information, and I'll give it to you as a PM. He's the best and also the cheapest, a real treasure. - jus'

Oh yea, Teeco's right; this is rant central! So yell yer head off; we'll listen.
Good news: no more trying to convince yourself you're not stupid! You're dyscalculic, which is NOT the same thing, any more than a bum knee means you have to be in a wheelchair. If anything, you'll find the intelligence level around here is higher than usual. Browse through the forums here; there are any number of coping mechanisms and resources listed, and we're always coming up with more! Welcome.
Blessed are the PURR in heart! |

Hey there Harried, I'm Kat, welcome to the forum! You are absolutely NOT stupid, that is clearly obvious from the way you present yourself in writing. I agree with Kestrel on her point that the average IQ level seems to be, if anything, higher than normal around here. A lot of us seem to have mentally compensated for our disability in math by being brilliant in other areas, particularly reading and writing, or art, or even music.
Your lack of medical insurance should not matter as far as getting LD testing because it is not a "medical" issue the way ADHD is. ADHD is considered a medical condition basically because they can medicate for it, meaning there must be some sort of chemical basis. You can't medicate a learning disability so your medical insurance wouldn't cover it anyway (mine didn't and I have federal, arguably the best medical coverage you can get in the United States).
Testing can run you anywhere from $200-$1,000 if you do it privately. If you go through the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitative Services (which you can find here: http://www.okreha... ) it may cost substantially less, or nothing at all, depending on what they can do for you. If you're willing to drive, Jus has already told you that she had a great experience with a psychologist in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, so that may be something to consider too. (I have no idea how far apart Tulsa and DFW are... you know, the whole spatial skills sucking part of dyscalcluia )
Anyway, welcome again to the forum, I hope you stick around and enjoy it!

Another good place to get tested (I've heard) is through your local university. A lot of schools have Ed/Psych departments, and that means cheap grad student labor.
