Ironically one of the sobriety field tests used in my area (as in if you fail the breathalyzer they'll just assume your high and take your ass in for blood testing) is counting back from 100, and also the alphabet backwards-- which are both things I've been asked to do in LD AND ADHD evaluations. I dread ever getting pulled over, I think my dyscalculia has gotten worse in the last year. |

Hi all,
This is all quite interesting, I would say that there's a lack of information on this subject partly due to the lack of research done, but mainly down to social status, because it's all to do with mental health, people are scared of it maybe or it's defiantly a major taboo in any case.
I have yet to find someone who will accept my mental health who haven't had some experience with it themself's, be that them personally or a friend ect.
In life, there's things you just don't get, and you never will, it's not in your physical, mental, emotional make up, it's just not for you. If I knew that at the start I wouldn't have tried so hard. I wish more people would understand that. |

I started writing this post as a response to Kat's above post, but by the time I could finish it, I see that there are at least two more posts after Kat's. So, Kat, as I was saying....
Yes, that was exactly my purpose in posting those excerpts,... showing yet another way that the lives of some of us could be affected by dyscalculia. We don't all have the same 'problems', so we wouldn't expect that each of us will be affected the same in every situation.
I'm a proponent of working toward having a United States Association, just as the UK members are working toward that goal for their part of the world. We, in the US, have the Americans with Disabilities Act. The laws are different here from the laws in the UK or in Australia. In those countries, there are different laws, rules, and/or codes. And each country has different 'legal designations' for this issue that we call, in general, dyscalculia.
The links that I posted at the beginning of this Thread show how knowledge of the US goverment's "Americans with Disabilities Act" is incorporated into the training of police officers. I'm pleased that this Thread has attracted so much attention from forum members. - jus' |

Dear Fox,
Dyscalculia is called Mathamatics Disorder here in the US. It is not a Mental Health condition, in that, it is not an 'illness' to be medicated. Are you able to open the video links that I posted at the beginning of this Thread? They are about how American police officers are trained to interact with people with disabilities here in the US. - jus' |

Ive been pulled over several times for turning the blinker in the wrong direction and have been asked to do sobriety tests... I explained my situation and they ended up only doing a breathalyzer. Lucky (or not so) for me, I have a tibial torsion in both legs which is very visible and have balance issues so I can't complete a regular field test. (well, not without the cop having a great laugh at my expense and in front of my kids.) I have only been taken in once and I was 19 and pregnant.
Personally I would like to see the ADA be more effective because as of now, it seems to do more harm than good... but thats another thread altogether.
I was going to conquer the world... but then I got distracted by something shiny. |

Dear Hera_Caine,
Several forum members, myself included, have marveled when finding out that some of the rules that are supposed to help us get a leveled playing field educationally, are, in the wrong hands, those very rules can be applied in ways that make graduation more difficult rather than easier. Have you seen the movie "The Music Within"? I rented it at Blockbuster about six months ago. It's a wonderful movie. It's about the man who the government assigned to write the Americans with Disabilities Act. Please watch it for me? - jus' |
