I just want to say hi to everyone on this site, and a massive thank you to the people who set it up in the first place.

I have felt dumb and stupid for so long and it is soooo good to finally have a place to chat to other people who have dyscalculia. Up until the age of about 16 I didn't even know what it was called (I'm now 28), god time flies huh?!

I'd also like to say hi to Ned, who is going thru a hell of a hard time right now. I just read your post Ned and I would like to offer my support to you any time you need it. Stay positive!!

My fantastic boyfriend found this site for me, and everyone seems so nice and helpful and really caring, I'm just so pleased to be here and to finally be able to talk about "this thing in my head" without feeling stupid.

Please feel free to chat to me, if you're online now. Take care y'allSmile

*Quick update*

I keep reading about people getting tested for dyscalculia to find out how bad they have it. Does anyone know where you can go to get tested?

Hi Bubble, Take it from me you are definitely among friends here as we Dyscalculiacs Dyslexics, Dysgraphics etc. have pretty much suffered through similar problems and anxieties that have caused a lot of us to retreat from those who simply don't understand. Here on this forum, I have found genuine understanding, empathy and help when its needed. Please note you are not dumb or stupid as I would bet you are highly creative and good in English. By the way,I love your avatar and the beautiful colors in it. CoolPfftSmileHope you find this forum as informative and empathetic as I have. Good Luck Sign me, OneOutofOrderScrewballPfftGrinSmile

Hello Countess, A fine heartfelt hello to you and your daughter! How are things going for you both? Here in the U.S children are out of school for summer break. A nice reprieve from all the school stress until they return in late Summer. I'm always interested in other countries and their customs and wondered about school breaks for children in your beautiful country of Germany? Also what do children do for entertainment? Hi, welcome Smile

Where did you hear about dyscalculia for the first time?

You can contact The British Dyslexia Association, they can help you find someone near Melksham. But if you need testing to get help in school (now or in the future), then contact the disabilites office at the school first.

Oh Ert, I didn't answer your question did i. My mum came home one day when i'd had an absolutely crap day at school and said she'd heard about something called dyscalculus. Then a few years later I found a website which listed the symptoms of dyscalculus and I found that I had most of the symptoms. The website was really out of date though and didn't have a forum or anything, so it's really nice to be able to talk to all of you Smile

Odd thing about the "stupid" feeling. One reason this LD is so hard to recognize is that the people who have it are so smart.

When our son was struggling in school we could not figure it out - he was quick witted, smart, intuitive and his memory was incredible.

When you see someone with a mind like that you can't imagine that there would be any part of the brain that wasn't functioning perfectly.

How little we know of the human brain.

Hi OOoOS !
Well, the kids are having or soon be having their summer holidays. Summer is the longest: 6 hole weeks !!! Grin
*thinking* What do they do ? ....
Our last summer holiday: being on a 2-week-trip to Greece. Wonderful Country, love it. Being in the middle of Europe, the possiblilities of seeing other cultures are enormous (e.g. Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, France etc.)
Then going as often as we can to the public schwimming pool.
And the greatest : no early-morning-alarm !!!Pfft

Hi ya Bubble,

If you want to get tested, you're best to go through the Dyslexia institiute - it will cost you in the region of £310, bit expensive but you do get an 'offical' report that you can show people, so they don't just think you're making up excuses. Maybe we could start a new thread/section on getting tested, which contains info on how/where to get tested & cost for each contry/state?

Hope this helps, Cool

Hi BrackSmile,
In regard to;"Maybe we could start a new thread/section on getting tested, which contains info on how/where to get tested & cost for each contry/state?"

I recently wrote about this under the Getting Diagnosed thread, as I fully agree with you. I want to build a database, so that Members can simply look for their country/ state/ town and see what's listed.
So maybe you could rewrite your post under the Getting Diagnosed thread? Mentioning your location and your contact details for the Dyslexia Institute and how happy you were with their service.
Maybe what the test involved as well?
Your help will be much appreciated by other Members in your region.

GeoffSmile
