Rant about my advisor

I'm popping in because I need to vent about my adviser. Whenever I ask her a question, not only does she not answer, she makes me feel dumb for even asking. O.K., to be fair this doesn't happen every time, but it seems like it happens a lot. I'm going to school on line, so instead of seeing my adviser in person, I communicate with her via e-mail or through the school's message boards. Her last reply came back in big bold print, like she was yelling.

*sigh*

Well,at least this semester is almost over, and then I will only have to take two more classes before I graduate.

Dear Nissa,
I had a Student Loan person once who was exactly the same. And more recently, a Head of Financial Aid. Our problem is that these people hold positions where we need their help. It's almost impossible to get done what needs to be done without them. In my cases, every time I would ask a question, no matter how carefully I worded it, they always answer me with another question. If I answer that question, they just keep coming up with more questions until there is one that I can't answer. Another thing that they do is try to use 'Financial Aid jargon', so that I have to ask them what they mean. That gives them them the opportunity to not only 'not answer' my question, but also to roll their eyes, sigh, and act huffy that I've bothered them. Sound familiar? - jus'

Hiya Nissa!

I think you really have to remember that talking to someone per writing is a lot different from talking to people in person. There is a world of difference.
Your advisor wrote to you in bold letter maybe because she doesn't like you, but it may also be because she hit caps-lock by mistake Wink
I am a writer myself and I am a complete geek when it comes to typography, however, I've found that not a lot of people are! When I write a text to someone I always put loads of smileys in there to make sure that I get a certain mood across, so when my friends write back to me and their texts are completely void of smileys I always think they are angry with me or something Pfft
Also it's so easy to dismiss people over writing because there are no consequences, you don't have to face the person which means that things that are not acceptable when you talk to someone becomes acceptable. If she's an "online advisor" she probably spends a lot of time talking to people over emails and maybe she's forgotten how to talk to people in real life Pfft
Does she have a phone number that you can use instead?

It must be very frustrating for you, but I would just keep writing her until she answers you!

Nissa wasn't venting about her advisor solely on the basis that the word *sighs* was sent to her in 'big bold' print. Nissa had already told us, "Whenever I ask her a question, not only does she not answer, she makes me feel dumb for even asking." So, the word *sighs*, in big bold print, wasn't Nissa's only basis for feeling like venting about her advisor. Also, hitting 'caps lock' gives Capital letters, not 'bold'. - jus'

Actually, that was me sigh-ing; I didn't mean that the adviser wrote "sigh".

Pirullinen- This adviser is also a professor who teaches face to face classes as well as online classes. It's true that meaning can get lost when when people aren't communicating face to face (my sigh is a good example, I suppose), but I've met this adviser a couple of times, and she is the same way in person.
But thanks for trying to cheer me up Smile

Jus- The financial aid & student load people you describe do sound familiar. What are people like that doing in jobs that involve helping people?

Exactly. It's like they get those jobs and then it all goes to their heads. Oh, sorry about misunderstanding the message 'sigh'.;) And yet, there are people who 'have it all' and still don't get corrupted. Those are few and far between. It's like finding a rare jewel,... a black pearl,... when you find one. - jus'
