Hello, my name is chelsea and I decided to create a new thread titled :Hi everyone. I did this before I could find this thread so sorry!!! I'm in the process of getting information about testing @ my college and I will be doing this next tuesday but I know myself and I know I have dyscalculia. Such a chaotic situation really but it is really nice to find a web site where I feel ok talking about this because in my family its shameful and bad if you're not good at math so I don't talk about it at all and just hide it! Nice to meet everyone!! |

welcome here, fizzfazzle! I was diagnosed early in college after continually failing a remedial math class I needed that was required for entrance into the ACTUAL "for-credit" undergard. math class I would need to take. I was placed into it based on past high school grades possibly and probably my math SAT score... but anyway - glad you're going ahead to get the info. you need!
am sorry to read about the treatment/concerns with your family :-(
please feel free to share as you want here and know that you are NOT dumb and not alone!

Welcome (again)! You are definitely not alone nor dumb! Getting tested will help you a lot in school. I hide my LD from a lot of people as well. In fact, except two profs that I had to disclose to this week, the rest do not know about my learning disabilities. In fact, a lot of my family does not know I am dyscalculic. Here, however, even before my diagnosis (I figured out where to get tested from this forum!), I was able to openly discuss issues that I was having and fit in for a change. I trust that you will find it to be similar for you, as well.
I'm NOT lost, I'm just taking the scenic rout! |

Hey thanks so much This is great!! First i'm going to talk to my acedemic advisor and then i'm going to see the college's head psychologist, and hopefully he can do me a service. A big plus to this is that testing is free at my college so that's awesome. What was is like for you guys when you got tested? What did the test include? |

no problem
I was tested in 1990 through my state's vocational rehab. agency and the testing took several hours, may have been a whole afternoon or day....there were several tests including a many, many page "personality test" that had several questions asked various ways, one of those "fill in the bubbles" and there were tons of pages of those bubbles....not fun. There was also a math test and a test with manipulatives - blocks - see how you can put such-and-such together kinda thing.
At this point I'm very open about my LD and the only time I won't discuss is during a job interview - usually. Unless they stick a math test into it- that DID happen- surprise! Due to the nature of the job I suppose < vet assistant/receptionist> but I was still like so I disclosed right there. |

Sometimes my boyfriend will be trying to make me remember a place with technical terms and I just can't figure it out, so then he switches to the scenic side of things and i'm like well why didn't you say that in the first place you goon!?!?! Lol he's a keeper..he's good at math physics, chemistry. You can imagine my delight in finding this future husband material HAHA!!! Of course there are many other reasons as well!

hey fizzfazzle, my husband is also good at math, technical things, maps - fixes the stuff around the house - electrical, some plumbing, mechanics....tested out of basic chem. and electronics classes when he was still going to school at the technical college, before I met him at the university we both later attended. He can tell you such-and-such molecular structure and describe in extreme detail of the measurements of this and that. He discusses finances and mechanical/logistical details with any house/car-repair people and gives the compass directions/route to our house for those who have never been here.
He does network admin./programming/tech support.
He does not however, have any sense of direction, getting lost in places he's been to before, taking the wrong turn to go home <why he really needs maps/GPS> and doesn't do so great with subtleties of social interaction, body language, emotional awareness - the opposite of me. So I guess we end up complimenting each other.
