Well I'm 16 and I've loved the look of a violin for two years my favourite violinists are Ed Allenye Johnson, Jason Yang and Alexander Ryback.

Yesterday me, my Mum, my Sister and my Nephew went to a small violin shop to find out more about them I want to play electric violin but the man said not many people would want to take me on so I've decided I want to learn classical violin first.

My Mum said she's going to get me a violin for Christmas so I'm extra excited!
And I'm going to try and get a part time job to pay for violin lessons.

I want a hobby which I can improve on and become really good at and also have pleasure in the music.

so if there's anyone who plays violin I would love to talk to you and is 16 too old to start playing?

Hey Pixie! I'm a violinist, as well! No, I'm not 16, but I am majoring in music at my university. Classical violin is what I play, and it's a lot of fun. One day, I'm going to get a black electric violin on it with flames painted on it. How cool would that be?! For your violin, have your mom look for an Italian one, or German, or French. These are the best violins in the world. I personally own a 161 year old German violin. Amazing tone! Good luck! You're NEVER too old to learn something! I've helped a 40 year old start the violin. ^-^

Hi Pixie, I played violin from 4th grade through high school. There were a couple of people in my class who started playing violin at 14 or 15 years old freshman year. They didn't have prior experience. There were two orchestras, Intermediate and Advanced. The Begginers were taught separately in a practice room during one of the "regular group orchestra" times. By the end of Freshman year a few of the people who had no experience before in violin were able to join the intermediate level and eventually move up to advanced. It took hard work and some tutoring but these people were able to catch up to those who had experience from middle school. So if you want to play violin go for it!

How long does it take to learn the violin up to a decent level like say until you can learn a proper song not just like the little songs?

Pixie, the amount of time it takes to learn a piece varies from person to person. For some, they can move onto more advanced pieces within a few months. For others, it could take a year or more. The important thing is to realize that everyone learns at their own pace, and give yourself time to learn proper technique before trying more advanced material.

Squeaky Monster

Are you able to have you name carved on it or stick a small metal plate with your name carved onto your violin or will it distort the sound of it because people tend not to like me much and nick my stuff so I need a way of shoing its mine something they can't remove

Pixie,

Do NOT carve or install a metal plate on a violin! To do so changes the tone of the instrument and affects the way it vibrates. It ruins the instrument to do that. If you MUST have your name put on the instrument itself (though I wouldn't, I'd simply put a tag on the case), take it to a luither (someone who makes and repairs stringed instruments) and ask them to install a paper label on the inside of the instrument. It is also very difficult to remove something glued to the inside of an instrument, because of the face and F-holes being in the way. This would cost some money, but it is safer for your violin and will provide the safety you want to give your instrument. Also, always keep it locked in a case with your name on it. A case with a lock shouldn't cost that much. I have a lock on my case and would never use a case that didn't lock.
