For the past couple of months, I've had some edible herbs (weeds, actually) growing in my front lawn,... yes, right 'in' the front lawn, right in the middle of the grass. But since these dear little plants are edible, I've come to have affection for them. I have 'nettles', which grow up to two feet high. The leaves are prickly, but after boiling in soup, they get nice and soft,... similar to swiss chard. And some clover has chosen to make foot-tall green mounds of itself in the city-owned strip of green between my curb and my sidewalk. I've been making soup with each of these chlorophyll treasures,... taking turns with them. I'd made a big pot of stew (nettle leaves, carrots, potatoes, noodles, canned beans, and cured bacon pieces) one day, and had also harvested a bunch of clover, putting it into a vase of water to keep it ready for my next soup, when the happy story turned bitter sweet. I got home late that night. As soon as I pulled in my driveway, I knew that the landscape had changed. I don't know what possessed some kind neighbor to 'help' me. They may have seen me out harvesting with my kitchen knife and thought that I was trying to get rid of the weeds. Someone had -apparently from the tire tracks- run a rather large cutting machine over half of my lawn and half of the front city-owned portion of green area where the clover had been. I don't know who this kind person was. He (or she) is probably congratulating himself for being such a good samaritan and all the blessings that will come his way for this act of charity. But, alas! The free pots of healthy stew have ended for me.

Here's a video I liked, from Frisco, Texas, just north of me. The young man shows how there is an abundance of food around these parts. Identifying what's edible is one thing, but identifying who owns the plants and property is another. Still, it's good to know what's edible, especially in these difficult economic times. The video is short. - jus'
