Hi there! My name is Jamie. I am a 35 year old mom, wife, emplyee and college student. I live in Cleveland, Ohio.
ME + MATH = DISASTER
I have just recently dropped my fourth algebra class and I am afraid that I may not graduate on time because of my inability to understand anything beyond the basics. I had to take pre-algebra three times before I finally passed it with a "C." I was diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive type) years ago but my meds don't help me get math. I am looking for resources to get tested for dyscalculia in my area without any luck. I am hoping by becoming a member of this forum I will obtain the help I need!

Dear jlzturner,
<sighs> Yes, 'me too'. I failed Elementary Algebra three times. I never did pass it. Finally, I got tested for Mathematics Disorder and received the diagnosis for it. That changed the course of my life. With that diagnosis, I've been able to take a Logic class and replace my College Algebra credits with those Logic credits. That allowed me to finish my AA Paralegal degree. Elated, I forged through a Psychology class, two Biology classes, a History class, some other core classes that I really had no interest in taking,... to finish my AA at the community college. And now, again thanks to my diagnosis and the 'accommodations' that this affords me, I'm about to graduate from Uni with a BA in Spanish. Seriously, without the test and the MLD (math learning disability) diagnosis, I would still be repeating Elementary Algebra. It's like those funny cards that people show you. One side has a question and then says, "For answer see other side." And the other side has the same question and ends by saying, "For answer see other side." When do we learn that we need the MLD diagnosis?
I'm glad that you found that cute joke. Someone posted the words of the joke on a Thread here with jokes about math, but the words were just 'typed',... not so professionally done as yours. The ADHD diagnosis won't give you the accommodation of having your math credits substituted. My local State Vocational Rehabilitation agency paid for my testing. Others have gone to a nearby university which has a Masters program in psychology, asking to be tested by one of the graduate students. The students need 'subjects' to test, so the charge is lower to you. But the results are valid for your purposes because a licensed psychologist will be signing off on your test and Report. Please let us know if you need our help searching out a place to get tested. Welcome to the forum. - jus' |

Hi Jamie, like your joke you posted!
I'm sorry to read about the algebra class; I kept failing remedial college math which was why I eventually self-referred to my university's Disabled Student Services and got tested through my State's Vocational Rehab offices.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys! I'm seeing a psychologist in the next couple of weeks that specializes in adults with ADHD and learning disabilities. I am hoping that I will receive the help I need from my college to graduate. We shall see! Wish me luck!

Dear jlzturner,
So glad to hear back from you. Was afraid that we'd lost you. Hope that you testing goes well. Squeaky, RW, and I all needed that testing to be able to get beyond the huge math speed bump. You'll be so glad you've done this. - jus' |

hello and well-wishes for you, jlz!
'jus is quite correct in how some of us needed the testing during such a period as yours.
I know without my testing and following results I would have just been left floundering and would not have been able to graduate. |
