I hate how learning disabilities are labled as disabilities why can't they be called more of a learning difference more so than a disability. LD has many names but why can't it just be mainly called a difference in learning anything would be better than the word disability which it really isn't. That just gets me so mad especially the word learning disabled I hate it. They treat people with LD like we are less of a peraon because we have trouble learning in certain subjects. My learning difference is math and I do struggle with that but I just have to accept it and look for ways to overcome it.

Hi Riggs there has been a thread or threads on this but since I'm here I'll just put in my thought again - I think the learning "disability" aspect is important in terms of legislation for people with disabilities and in terms of education. Everyone - everyone - learns differently because we are all different people. Not everyone has a degree of difference that is so wide between this subject <math> and aspects related to it, and the between other areas that so it causes extreme/persistent difficulty into adulthood with things that most people automatically learn - or learn much more easily- as children. To me, that is what make a learning "disability" a "disability" and not a "difference". If it's simply a learning "difference" then why should we get accommodations in various areas?

For me, I like to call it what it is and work around it. Now, that does NOT translate to myself being "learning disabled" and there's no reason it needs to. I don't consider myself "disabled" at all - and I have memories of extreme bullying and memories lots of fear and trauma from when I was a young kid in Resource Room pull-out. I could use that background of mine to say to myself - I don't want it to be a learning "disability". But I think calling it a difference dilutes the reality of the situation. I happen to -have- a learning disability.
But- I'm not "disabled".

I enjoyed reading your 'mini essay' on the subject of "learning disability" versus "learning difference", RW. The explanation at the end of your first paragraph was especially good. On the word 'disabled', we have some differences, and maybe later I'll do what you've done and expand on that theme somewhere on the forum. For now, the reason I'm posting this is because I wanted to congratulate you on that beautiful first paragraph, without (forgive me) just giving a 'blanket statement' of completely agreeing with 'everything'. - jus'
