Oh, am sorry, am glad jus' came in because I missed the question by the OP, about when we knew we had a problem.......I would say I knew probably in elementary school - probably starting around third grade - when the other kids in my "regular" classrooms all seemed to automatically grasp concepts like "left" and "right" and concepts behind team sports and could tell time and count money and I understood none of that. My speech teach would come to get me to take me to the resource room in another wing of the school, and once she attempted to have me just go to meet her instead. She told me what time. I couldn't read the clock. She came to get me in my "regular" classroom and asked, "why were so late? how come you didn't come to meet me?" I felt ashamed but said that I couldn't read the clock.
